A weekly support group for men over the age of 50 in HMP Shotts has been recognised at Age Scotland's Annual Awards.
The group evolved from a pilot project that was delivered in partnership with the charity in the summer of 2024.
‘Ageing well in prison’ was a seven-week programme designed specifically to support older people in prison. It covered topics including moving your body, connecting with others, exploring food and drink, keeping your brain active, and emotional wellbeing.
Participants completed interactive workbooks to document their progress, with everyone noting positive outcomes. [The evaluation report can be found here.]
With men over the age of 50 making up a quarter of the establishment's population, staff saw a clear need for support to continue beyond the pilot project and so the weekly over 50s group was established.
During this dedicated time, older prisoners come together to take part in activities and spend time with their peers. Supported by the NHS Health Improvement Team, they are also given health and wellbeing advice to “live well” in prison and prepare for eventual release.
