A dedicated phone line is now in place in every prison for anyone to raise concerns about someone in our care. The line is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you have a concern about an individual's mental health or wellbeing, please call the prison where they are located. The main phone numbers of all the SPS prisons are listed below:

Once connected, you will hear an automated message asking you to ‘Press 9’.

Your call will then be transferred to a member of staff and answered as a priority. Please provide as much detail as you can when reporting your concern.

*Please note, this process may differ slightly for HMP Kilmarnock.

What happens next?

Staff will meet with the individual, let them know a concern has been raised, discuss it, and check they are not at risk of causing harm to themselves.

The individual may then be supported via Talk To Me, the Scottish Prison Service’s suicide prevention strategy, which means they will receive agreed support and be checked on at regular intervals.

If the individual is not considered at risk of suicide, they may still be provided with other appropriate support, such as through a referral to the mental health team or other services.
