Since early 2023, HMP Kilmarnock have held a monthly 'Veterans Breakfast'. The event invites individuals in our care, who previously served in the armed forces, to come together in a safe space and develop a peer support network.

The meetings are organised by Officer Mark Sneddon, who himself served in the Royal Navy Submarine Service. Each month, different guests are invited and have included Forces employment charities, Minds Of Recovery and the Lord Provost for Kilmarnock.

Most recently, the group welcomed Alison Maitland from Veterans First Point and Gordon Selwyn from SACRO, who can provide specific support to veterans in custody and assist with their transition from prison back into the community.

Over 30 individuals have engaged with the group since it's inception and they hope to continue to grow with plans to revamp the establishment's war memorial this year.

Speaking of the value of the group, Mark said: "When the label of offender is placed upon you, it can create overwhelming feelings of shame and guilt, particularly from those who once took pride in wearing a uniform. This shift in identity, from being a respected member of the armed forces to being assigned a prison number and a new identity, can be a deeply challenging and disorienting experience that requires significant support and understanding.”
