A business case setting out the “significant opportunities” HMP Glasgow will bring has been published by the Scottish Prison Service.

The document outlines the careful consideration given to how to replace Scotland’s largest prison, HMP Barlinnie, which is more than 140 years old.

The SPS considered three options – doing nothing, redeveloping HMP Barlinnie, or building a new prison.

This analysis showed that developing HMP Glasgow was the most cost-effective option and would deliver the best long-term benefits to the communities we serve.

A HMP Glasgow Proposition was set out to ensure these benefits are realised.

It states: “Our supportive community provides safe and accessible opportunity for people to develop the relationships and resources required to comprehend and understand life events; the confidence, skills and supports to manage things in their control and identify worthwhile pursuits that offer meaning and purpose.

“Through the physical resources and talent of the people who work, live, and visit our prison we provide a social value that is world leading in a custodial context and positively impacts on the wellbeing of our wider community.

“Our sustainable approaches have a direct and positive contribution to the environment through delivery of a circular economy that benefits the internal and external community.”
