When a loved one dies in prison, the grief and distress of bereavement can be made even more difficult by the separation that comes with a custodial sentence.
The Family Support Booklet provides information about the support available to families following a death in custody. It also explains the review, investigation and inquiry processes that may take place when someone dies while in the care of the Scottish Prison Service (SPS).
The booklet has been developed by the SPS in partnership with the NHS and Families Outside. It was informed by extensive consultation, including feedback from families who have experienced the loss of a relative in custody.
AdvoCard, an independent advocacy organisation, provides a Family Advocacy Service for families bereaved by a death in custody. The service offers support and guidance to help families understand and navigate the legal, investigative and review processes that follow.
The service is free, available to families across Scotland, and operates independently of the SPS and all other organisations involved in the review and investigation process.
