We recently welcomed Sky Sports to HMP Low Moss to see our fantastic partnership with Street Soccer Scotland in action.
Street Soccer run football training programmes in several of our establishments, helping those in custody to improve their mental and physical health, gain football-related qualifications, and make positive life choices to reduce their risk of reoffending.
What makes these programmes so engaging for those in our care is the peer-led approach. The majority of delivery staff have lived experience, meaning they truly understand the challenges participants, or “players”, face.
The programmes offer SCQF-accredited qualifications which focus on communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. They are fully accessible for those who struggle with literacy, and finish with events organised by the players themselves.
The support for participants doesn’t stop at the prison gates either. Players are encouraged to stay in touch with the charity, engage in support from partner agencies, and continue to play in the 60 sessions and programmes held all over Scotland every week.
