For most parkrunners, the weekend starts with a Saturday morning 5k. But at HMP Shotts, the starting line looks a little different.
Nine weeks ago, the prison launched Batonrigg parkrun, making history as the first parkrun anywhere in the world to receive permission to take place on a Friday.
Almost 90 individuals in our care have registered for the event, with between 30 and 40 taking part each week, supported by a team of seven volunteer marshals who include people in custody.
The event is open to both those in custody and staff, bringing people together through a shared activity that promotes physical and mental wellbeing, builds confidence, and creates a sense of community, routine and achievement.
