We are delighted to share that Greg Van Nuil, an Officer Instructor at HMP Dumfries has won a prestigious Butler Trust commendation for designing, and bringing to life, the prison’s ‘Wellbeing Garden’.

He received his commendation from HRH Princess Anne, at a ceremony held at St James' Palace, London, on 19th March.

Nominated for his “tremendous commitment and dedication”, Greg has transformed an area of wasteland into a sensory haven for all, and for those with mental health issues and dementia in particular.

Working with Trellis Horticultural Society, Greg considered the five senses when designing the garden incorporating a pond and flowing water and the pergola area with scented flowers. Importantly, Greg encouraged and motivated those in our care, many of whom had a history of anti-social behaviour, to get involved.

Now, Greg actively promotes access to the wellbeing garden to a variety of groups and individuals from a broad prison demographic including the elderly, those in recovery and those seeking support for their mental health.

He has also set up ongoing activities, teaching individuals new skills in joinery alongside gardening, providing a sense of achievement and responsibility. Greg is passionate about supporting individuals with a range of learning and behavioural needs to be involved in the garden project in a way that works for them.

Furthermore, Greg has sought opportunities for the wider public to benefit from the garden. He has made links with local care homes, arranging for their residents to spend time enjoying the space.

Greg said “I am honoured and privileged to have received a Butler Trust commendation and I would like to thank my colleagues and those in our care who have congratulated me on my achievement, it is very much appreciated. The day itself was a great experience and a very proud day for myself and my family.”

Andy Hunstone, Governor of HMP Dumfries said “I am delighted that Greg has been recognised for his motivation and desire to develop the skills of those in his care in the development of the Wellbeing Garden. His engagement with the individuals, partners in the prison and the local community of Dumfries & Galloway, fully endorses our ambition to be a prison that supports both those in our care and the wider community. The Butler Trust is fantastic recognition and one that we are extremely proud of.”
