How to Register

How to Register for the Victim Notification Scheme

If an offender was sentenced to 18 months or longer in prison, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) is responsible for determining who is eligible to register on the Victim Notification Scheme (VNS). If you wish to join the scheme and do not have the relevant application form which allows you to do so, please contact Victim Information and Advice (VIA) at COPFS who will be able to assist.  Their contact details are as follows:-

Telephone: 0300 020 3000

Email:  Enquirypoint@copfs.gov.uk

If you are a victim of an offender sentenced to less than 18 months you also need to register. You are entitled to know the date of release of the offender or if they have escaped from custody. If you are the victim and wish to receive this information please contact the Scottish Prison Service

Please note that the Scottish Prison Service will have to check your eligibility and this can take a couple of working days.

If you need help in deciding whether to join the Victim Notification Scheme, or to complete the form, you can contact Victim Support Scotland,  a national charity that helps victims of crime. Their helpline number is 0800 160 1985 and is open Monday-Friday, 8am-8pm.
