HM Prison Aberdeen
Aberdeen is a local prison accommodating remand prisoners and male adults serving sentences of up to four years.
HM Prison Barlinnie
Barlinnie accommodates male prisoners from local courts. Remand prisoners and short term prisoners are held here as well as prisoners serving longer sentences who are awaiting placement in long term institutions.
HM Prison Castle Huntly
Castle Huntly is an open prison which holds low supervision adult male prisoners serving 18 months and over, including life sentence prisoners who have been assessed as suitable to serve part of their sentence in open conditions and those who require continuing support on an SPS methadone programme.
HM Prison and Young Offenders Institution Cornton Vale
Cornton Vale is the main prison for women and it accommodates all categories of female prisoners including young offenders. The remand block at Cornton Vale provides a purpose built custodial facility for female remand prisoners.
HM Prison Dumfries
Dumfries is a local prison for male adult prisoners and those serving sentences under four years.
HM Prison Edinburgh
Edinburgh houses adult male remand prisoners, those convicted but awaiting sentence, those serving sentences of up to four years, and convicted prisoners over four years awaiting allocation to a long term prison. Ingleston House contains a national facility for prisoners coming to the end of long-term sentences and prepares them for open conditions and release on licence.
HM Prison Glenochil
Glenochil holds long-term male prisoners with sentences of more than four years.
HM Prison Inverness
Inverness is a local prison servicing courts in the area which holds remand and short term adult prisoners (with a sentence of less than four years). There is also a small separate unit for female prisoners.
HM Prison Noranside
Noranside is an open prison which holds low supervision adult male prisoners serving 18 months and over, including life sentence prisoners who have been assessed as suitable to serve part of their sentence in open conditions and those who have been convicted of sexual offences.
HM Prison Peterhead
The prison at Peterhead provides a National resource, holding adult male sex offenders with sentences of four years or more. It is currently the main centre for delivery of STOP 2000, the programme intervention for sex offenders. This programme is also delivered to young offenders and short-term offenders at Polmont and Barlinnie respectively.
HM Prison Perth
This prison is both a local prison facility for male prisoners serving sentences of less than four years, and also holds long-term prisoners transferred from local prisons.
HM Young Offenders Institution Polmont
Polmont holds male young offenders aged between 16 and 21. Polmont is also the centre for all convicted young offenders and will also accommodate West of Scotland remand prisoners aged between 16 to 21.
HM Prison Shotts
Shotts is a maximum security prison for adult male prisoners with sentences of four or more years.
Scottish Prison Service College, Polmont
The Scottish Prison Service College offers courses for trainee prison officers including accreditation of SVQs. There is also a wide range of specialised training including management training, IT skills, and operational aspects of Prison work.
