Prison Officers come to the SPS from all walks of life, all sorts of backgrounds and with various experiences and qualifications. The SPS employs male and female prison officers in all prisons, all of whom are well respected and valuable members of society. As an SPS employee you will perform a vital social function and will be part of making Scotland a safer place.

Communication Skills You’re approachable, a good listener and you can see the other person’s point of view. You may not agree with them, but you can empathise with people whose experiences differ from your own.

Personal Integrity Confident and focused, your calm sense of fairness and your personal integrity mean you are someone others can trust.
Health and Wellbeing You are aware of lifestyle choices that contribute and enable you to enjoy optimum health and wellbeing. Lifestyle screening will take place within the first year of employment and thereafter, every three years. This consists of a personal, confidential health interview and assessment conducted by an experienced occupational health nurse. It will generally be carried out in your place of employment.
This will provide the SPS with motivated, healthy and competent staff, working together to deliver the SPS Vision to create and deliver correctional excellence.
