Welcome to the Scottish Prison Service’s official website. As a major Agency of the Scottish Government we are committed to providing information about the service we carry out on behalf of the Scottish public. We hope you find the information on this website helpful in understanding the work being carried out in Scotland’s prisons.
As an agency of the Scottish Government we employ about 4000 staff at 15 establishments across Scotland, a Training College, Central Storage Facility and a Headquarters Office. On any day we are responsible for the secure custody of around 8000 prisoners and have an annual budget of more than £486 million to run our prisons and support programmes to tackling the offending behaviour of prisoners to prepare them for eventual release.
The Scottish Government is committed to a Safer Scotland where individuals and communities are free from crime and from the fear of crime. The Scottish Prison Service is committed to supporting that outcome by maintaining secure custody and good order in our prisons; caring for prisoners with humanity and providing appropriate opportunities to address their offending behaviour and develop the potential to reduce further re-offending. We will do so in partnership with colleagues in the wider criminal justice systems, working to improve the value for money for the taxpayer.
