PRISON DEMOLITION SETS RECYCLING STANDARD
The completed demolition of HMP Low Moss at Bishopbriggs met high targets for recycling and supported local charities with donations from the site.
After outline planning permission for a new prison on the site of HMP Low Moss was granted in October 2007, the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) set about preparing the site for re-development.
The planning conditions contained in the outline planning permission required that any demolition works considered how to ‘maximise recycling and reduce the waste generated’.
SPS has its own sustainability policy which is being applied to its extensive development programme, funded by a record £120 million a year funding by the Scottish Government.
This policy required that those tendering for the demolition works addressed its aims in their proposals as well as the requirements of the council’s planners.
SPS took care to ensure when selecting a contractor that not only cost was a factor but also that recycling and re-use of materials were built in.
The successful contractor, Carillion plc, set out a target for re-using or recycling material from the old site at 98 per cent.
The target was exceeded with the actual amount of material re-used or recycled measured at 99.55 per cent. Less than half a per cent went to landfill.
