Edinburgh Prison - Visiting

 

How To Book Family/Friend Visit:

Please note all prisoner visits require to be booked by the prisoner.

There is a Family Contact Development Officer on duty at all visit sessions. If you require assistance or more information they can be contacted by phoning 0131 444 3113.

 

How To Book Agent Visit:

Agents visits can be arranged on 0131 444 3124.

All agents are required to give 24hrs notice of any visits or amendments to visit bookings.

Sessions: Mon to Fri - 09.45 - 10.30, 10.45 - 11.30, 13.30 - 14.15, 14.30 - 15.15, 15.30 - 16.15.

Evening sessions are available on the day for professional agents that have been unable to attend the day-time sessions. Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri - 17.45 - 18.45

 

Visiting Guidelines:

2 forms of identification are required for visitors, one of which must be photographic ID

The following examples shall be accepted as suitable for photographic ID purposes:

  • Valid Passport
  • Photographic Driving Licence
  • Citizen/Validate UK Card
  • Workplace photo ID card
  • Photographic Bank Card
  • Other official photo ID i.e. membership card

The following examples shall be accepted as suitable for proof of address provided it is less than 3 months old:

  • Utility bill
  • Council tax bill
  • Benefit book
  • Bank statement
  • Other letter from official source

Entry to the prison will not be permitted without acceptable identification.

 

Parking Facilities:

 There are extensive public parking facilities which include disabled spaces for visitors to H M Prison Edinburgh

 

Disabled Facilities:

 There are disabled facilities including toilets etc in HMP Edinburgh.

 

Visiting Times:

We ask that all visitors book in to the visitors centre at least 30 minutes before commencement of the visit. This allows sufficient time for staff to manage the visit.

 

Remand Prisoners

 

  •  Remand prisoners may have one 30 minute visit daily, except Sundays.
  •  Visits are booked by prisoners in their respective halls.
  •  Maximum of 3 adult visitors, this does not include children.

 

Convicted Prisoners

 

  • Convicted prisoners are entitled to not less than 2 hours in any period of 28 consecutive days, in accordance with The Prison and Young Offenders Institutions (Scotland) Rules 2011.
  • The maximum number of visits per month is dependent on a prisoner's location within the establishment.  Please ask the duty FCDO for more information.
  • Visits are booked by prisoners in their respective halls.
  • Each visit lasts 45 minutes with a maximum of 3 adults; this does not include children.
  • Visits for prisoners in the segregation unit take place at 2.30 & 3.30 sessions Monday to Friday and 2.15 & 3.15 on Saturday.

Handing In Property/Money:

Property for convicted and untried prisoners may be handed in at the main vestibule on the following days and times.

 

Monday to Friday

10.00 - 16.00

Tuesday evening

17.45 - 18.45

Saturday & Sunday afternoon

12.30 - 14.00

 

Prisoners will complete the relevant forms with the date and time property is being handed in. It is the prisoners responsibility to inform their visitors what they can hand in and when. Visitors handing in property require photographic identification and evidence of their home address, as described for visiting identification. They will be provided with a receipt.

You may deposit money for a prisoner before a visit at the Prisoners Personal Cash/Fines office situated in the visitor's entrance to the prison. You must provide the prisoners full name and prison number. A receipt will be issued to you.

Posting In Property/Money:

PPC

If posting in money it is advised to use a postal order made out to either the prisoner or the Scottish Prison Service. It is not recommended to send cash but if there is no option, it is advised to send it either recorded or special delivery.

Cheques should be made out to the Scottish Prison Service with details of the prisoner on the reverse.

Property

Any package should contain the prisoners details and should be addressed as shown on the Edinburgh Prison home page.

 

Complaints/Comments:

Comment forms can be acquired from the vestibule entrance to the prison.
