Equality and Diversity

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is an executive agency of the Scottish Government, responsible for the management of HM Prisons and Young Offenders Institutions in . There are currently 13 public sector and 2 privately managed prisons in . SPS Vision is “Making Scotland safer by protecting the public and reducing reoffending”

The Mission Statement of the Scottish Prison Service is:

  • to keep in custody those committed by the courts; to maintain good order in each prison;
  • to care for prisoners with humanity;
  • to encourage prisoners to take opportunities which will reduce the likelihood they re-offend and help reintergrate then back into their community.

The Values of the Scottish Prison Service are:

  • Respect: We work with fairness, justice and honesty and have proper regard for others needs and rights.
  • Integrity: We apply high ethical, moral and professional standards in our conduct.
  • Teamwork: We work together and with partners to provide safety, support, efficiency and improved outcomes.
  • Equality: We work together to embed the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion to promote a culture of openness, transparency and fairness in all we do.

The SPS Strategy Framework for Valuing Diversity, Promoting Equality and Human Rights Equality and Diversity Strategic Framework enables equality, diversity, inclusion and human rights to be mainstreamed at the core of all our work and to be embedded at all levels within the organisation.

To help us carry out our functions, we:

1. employ people
2. keep people in custody
3. develop policies and procedures
4. engage, involve and consult people
5. procure goods, facilities and services
6. monitor and evaluate our work
7. screen and impact-assess our work
8. annually review, report and publish our single equality scheme

These activities are what our Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Action Plan Equality,DiversityandHumanRightsActionPlan are based upon to meet the legal requirements associated with our public functions. The SPS Equality and Diversity Organisation Structure OrganisationalStructure supports the progression of the Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Action Plan.
