Equality and Diversity

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is an executive agency of the Scottish Government, responsible for the management of HM Prisons and Young Offenders Institutions. There are currently 13 public sector and two privately managed prisons in Scotland. The SPS Vision is 'Making Scotland safer by protecting the public and reducing reoffending'.

The Mission Statement of the Scottish Prison Service is:

  • to keep in custody those committed by the courts; to maintain good order in each prison;
  • to care for prisoners with humanity;
  • to encourage prisoners to take opportunities which will reduce the likelihood they re-offend and help reintergrate then back into their community.

The Values of the Scottish Prison Service are:

  • Respect: We work with fairness, justice and honesty and have proper regard for others needs and rights.
  • Integrity: We apply high ethical, moral and professional standards in our conduct.
  • Teamwork: We work together and with partners to provide safety, support, efficiency and improved outcomes.
  • Equality: We work together to embed the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion to promote a culture of openness, transparency and fairness in all we do.

The SPS Vision for Valuing Diversity, Promoting Equality and Human Rights is-

  • Everyone in SPS values diversity in all aspects of work;
  • Everyone in SPS is responsible for respecting and promoting equality and human rights; and
  • We have sustainable and effective policies and procedures that place equality, diversity, inclusion and respect for human rights at the centre of everything we do.

This is based on a human rights based approach which is underpinned by human rights values. As this has been a cultural change the process is on-going. We will continue to progress this approach in all our areas of our work.

We are an agency of the Scottish Government and some of our reporting requirements under the Equality Act 2010 Public Sector Equality Duty have been incorporated into the Scottish Government's information.
