The SPS Annual Conference took place on the 4th and 5th November at the Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre in Glasgow. The event saw over 160 delegates join us for two days of presentations, Throughcare innovation and a World Cafe. All sessions were fully interactive with delegates providing feedback throughout all of the sessions via iPads.

The Conference was introduced by Conference Chair Mick Stoney, followed by speeches from Chief Executive Colin McConnell and Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson. Director-General of Learning & Justice Paul Johnston spoke on The Strategy for Justice in Scotland: Progress & Challenges.The day continued with a webinar on Adolescent Brain Development by Professor Amanda Kirby University of South Wales, followed by presentations on the Pains of Imprisonment by Dr Ben Crewe, Cambridge University, and Trauma and Impact on Women Offending by Anne McKechnie, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

For the afternoon session, delegates were split into two groups and both groups got the change to watch the Key Change performance by Open Class Theatre Company, as well as the Distant Voices performance by Vox Liminis.

Day 2 saw a presentation from Bethany Schmidt, University of Cambridge, on Measuring the Quality of Prison Life. STV Executives Louise Say and Mick McAvoy came along to launch the STV/Sky television show 'Prison: First and Last 24 Hours'. For the afternoon session, again delegates were split into two groups with both groups attending a Throughcare & Innovation Practice workshop by Gillian Walker and Stuart Pomfret, and the World Cafe event which included Impact of Occupational Therapy within a Prison, Parenting, Tenancy & Citizenship Award, Social Care Needs and Freedom Bakery.

The conference was a great success with positive feedback from everyone involved
