First Step Drug Education Programme
SPS Research Young People in Custody in Scotland
The level of drug use amongst Young Offenders is very high with more than 95% of having tried drugs. Only 15% of the sample reported never having committed a crime connected with drug or alcohol use, suggesting a strong link between crime and substance abuse. Less than 25% of those who had taken drugs had received help for their substance abuse.
When the current offence, previous convicted offences and previous non-convicted offences were considered, those admitting to drug related problems had more occurrences of crimes of dishonesty. Of particular concern was the self-reported expectancy that 46% of the sample would return to drug misuse after release.
The sessions run for 2 hours 15-minutes for four days per week, four weeks per course.
The objectives of the First Step Programme:
* To heighten awareness and knowledge in relation to drugs, their effects and the related harm that drug misuse may cause.
